Man who murdered Katy Rourke jailed for life

A murderer who knifed his Gumtree flatmate to death after she snubbed his pleas for sex was today jailed for life with a minimum of 17 years behind bars.

Gary Stevenson killed 25-year-old Katy Rourke at the flat they shared in Govan, Glasgow, in December last year after the pair had been drinking.

The 27-year-old “totally lost control” and repeatedly punched Ms Rourke, originally from Broughty Ferry, before getting a kitchen knife and stabbing her three times.

He pleaded guilty to the murder last month and the case had been continued for background reports.

The court previously heard Stevenson had drank half a bottle of Buckfast before he and Ms Rourke, originally from Broughty Ferry near Dundee, shared a bottle of vodka on the night of December 29.

Stevenson later confessed to police that he killed Ms Rourke, telling them: “I stabbed her. I think it was three times.”

He told officers: “If it wasn’t her, it would be someone else. I just want to tell the truth for the sake of the family.”

Stevenson also admitted hitting her repeatedly before attacking her with the kitchen knife.
