As Betty White prepares to celebrate her 99th birthday on Sunday, the beloved actress credits her long life to laughter.
“Don’t take yourself too seriously,” she advised in a recent interview with People. “You can lie to others — not that I would — but you cannot lie to yourself.”
White added that a “sense of humor” has helped keep her going all these years.
“Just looking at the positive side and not dwelling on the downside,” she said. “Takes up too much energy being negative. Also having a good agent who keeps me busy all the time.”
The “Golden Girls” star recognized that at her age she is “blessed with good health,” so she feels as if “turning 99 is no different than turning 98.”
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, White shared she plans to celebrate her birthday this year “visiting with close friends and bringing food to my animal friends.”
Last year, her “Proposal” co-stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds recorded a duet, singing “Happy Birthday” to White for her 98th birthday, which went viral.
She previously joked that vodka and hot dogs were the key to a happy and healthy life.
