Saved by the Bell actor Dustin Diamond has been hospitalized, Entertainment Tonight reports. The actor, who had been complaining of “pain all over his body and a general sense of unease,” was admitted to the hospital in Florida over the weekend, his team confirmed to ET.
While Diamond is currently “undergoing tests” at the hospital and is planning to have a biopsy, doctors are concerned the actor may have cancer. “All we ask is just people put him in [their] thoughts and prayers,” his team told the outlet. Diamond has a family history of cancer, having previously lost his mother to the disease.
“It’s serious, but we don’t know how serious yet,” a spokesperson told Today.com. “He hasn’t been feeling well,” they added. “He’s at an undisclosed hospital in Florida. We are hoping for a speedy recovery.”
Diamond rose to fame playing Screech Powers on Saved by the Bell, which first premiered on NBC in 1989. While the popular sitcom ended in 1993, Diamond reprised his role in two spinoffs, Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Diamond’s sitcom costars recently reunited for a Saved by the Bell reboot on the NBC streaming service Peacock, but the actor was notably absent from the revival series.
In a November interview with ET, Diamond’s Saved by the Bell costar Elizabeth Berkley said she was unsure if he would be joining the show. “We’re discussing, but I just don’t know yet,” she said. “It depends on the storylines and how they play out and all of that, but I wish Dustin nothing but the best. I just haven’t seen him for a lot of years but I do wish him the best. He was always kind to me.”
When the Saved by the Bell reboot aired, Diamond’s character was written off with an explanation in Episode 8, per E News, when Mario Lopez’s character, A.C. Slater, says, “Screech is so lucky he and Kevin get to live on the International Space Station, so he doesn’t have to deal with all this.”
Diamond has stepped out of the spotlight and away from acting in recent years, with his most recent IMDb credit listed as the short film Catching Up, which premiered last year.
