Federal prosecutor for DC doesn’t rule out charging Trump in riot – Thebritishjournal

The federal prosecutor overseeing Washington, DC, did not rule out the possibility of charging President Trump in the deadly US Capitol riot perpetrated by his supporters.

“We’re trying to deal with the closest alligators to the boat right now, and those are the people that obviously breached the Capitol and created violence and mayhem there,” said Acting US Attorney Michael Sherwin during a Thursday press call on the mayhem.

“But yes, we are looking at all actors here. Not only the people who went into the building.”

Asked point-blank if that outlook extended to the president, Sherwin said that all options were on the table.

“We’re looking at all actors here, and anyone that had a role and the evidence fits the elements of a crime, they’re going to be charged,” he said.

In a raucous rally held shortly before hundreds of rioters invaded the US Capitol and disrupted the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s 2020 win, Trump encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell” to protest the election result and march on the Capitol.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
