A tweet from Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in 2016 predicting that the GOP “will get destroyed,” by President Donald Trump has resurfaced online as Democratic candidates appear to have won Georgia for control of the U.S. Senate.
“If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…….and we will deserve it,” Graham tweeted in 2016 when Trump was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

Though Graham has long since changed his tune on the president, by Wednesday morning, the tweet had begun recirculating as Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock appeared to have won their races in a key Georgia runoff.
The Associated Press has named Warnock the winner over Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler, while Jon Ossoff holds a narrow lead over Republican Senator David Perdue. Ossoff declared victory in a video posted to social media, but no networks or the AP have called the race as of publication time.
If both Democrats win, the Republican Party will lose control of the Senate. The chamber would be split 50/50, between 48 Democrats and two independents who caucus with them, and 50 Republicans. If needed, a tiebreaking vote would go to Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, giving Democrats control of the upper chamber.
Warnock will be the first Black senator elected from the South, while victory for Ossoff would make him the youngest senator elected to the chamber at 33.
On January 4, Graham tweeted that “Conservatives understand Georgia is the last line of defense in our fight against the radical socialist agenda.”

In October, the GOP senator issued a plea to his supporters, warning that if Democrats take control of the chamber, he will lose his opportunity to become Budget Committee chairman.
“Want to know what’s at stake this election? If we lose the Senate, socialist Bernie Sanders will become Budget Committee Chairman. If we hold the Senate, and I am re-elected, I will be Budget Committee Chairman,” Graham wrote.
The Georgia results come as a blow to the GOP in an election cycle that has seen Democrats gain significant traction.
This afternoon, some Republicans will make a last-ditch attempt to reject the Electoral College result as Congress certifies the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden.
However, these objections are not expected to carry enough support in either Congressional chamber to make a difference. Though the president continues to insist mass fraud was behind Biden’s victory, there is no evidence of widespread irregularities that would alter the outcome of the election.
On Sunday, Graham tweeted his criticisms of the efforts, referring to it as a political stunt.
“Proposing a commission at this late date—which has zero chance of becoming reality—is not effectively fighting for President Trump,” he tweeted. “It appears to be more of a political dodge than an effective remedy.”
Trump is expected to speak to supporters at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in a final effort to plead with Republican lawmakers and praise his supporters.
Newsweek reached out to Graham’s office for additional comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
