President Donald Trump’s personal Twitter account has been banned permanently, and social media users wasted no time in responding with snarky memes.
On Friday, Twitter announced its decision to permanently ban the account @realDonaldTrump “due to the risk of further incitement of violence” following Wednesday’s riot at the Capitol. The move was celebrated by celebrities, journalists, companies, political figures and netizens, who took to Twitter with a multitude of reactions.
“This is the first time a sitting president has been banned from Twitter going back to 1812,” Dave Brown wrote.
Some users joked that the president could start using his wife Melania Trump’s account.
“Someone make sure Donald doesn’t start tweeting from Melania’s account #TrumpBanned,” @ChyMadeDis tweeted.
“Just waiting for Melania to change her social media to MelaniaAndDonald like those fb couple accounts where you just know somebody got caught cheating #TrumpBanned #TrumpTwitterBan #WhereIsMelania,” another user added.
While many were happy about Twitter’s move, some criticized the website’s decision to ban the president from the platform. Jason Miller, a senior adviser to the president, called it “disgusting.”
“Disagree it’s censorship the left only wants their point of view. 75 million people voted for Trump,” a third user said.
“Fellow Trump supporters, the best way to respond is to hit em in their wallets! Deactivate your Twitter and Facebook accounts asap,” another opined. “Let’s show these big tech crooks we’re not going to stand for their censorship and clear alignment with crooked Democrats!”
The ban came after Trump’s last two tweets Friday, which Twitter said violated the company’s policy against the glorification of violence. One of the tweets indicated that Trump has no plans to attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
