Kathryn Dennis’ new relationship was the talk of Charleston — and not for the right reasons.
During Thursday night’s episode of “Southern Charm,” Dennis’ co-stars were stunned she’d started dating Chleb Ravenell, who is black, in the wake of backlash over her use of the monkey emoji while communicating with a black radio host.
“Banging a black guy is not — it doesn’t make you, like, ‘woke,’” Leva Bonaparte quipped in a confessional.
During the episode, Bonaparte also gossiped with Danni Baird and pals Madison Simon and Venita about Dennis and her relationship,
Bonaparte slammed Dennis, 29, for only reaching out to her after the emoji controversy because she and her husband are minorities. And Simon, who used to employ Dennis at her store Gwynn’s of Mount Pleasant, said Dennis’ actions were reprehensible and affected her and her family as well. When Venita asked if Dennis had apologized, Simon responded “no” and said the situation was “a slap in the face.”
“I wanna know if she’s bringing, like, a strategic black boyfriend,” Bonaparte, 41, said when asked how she feels about seeing Dennis at a party hosted by Madison LeCroy.
“I didn’t really think it was real,” she added. “That was her strategic move, I guess.”
It is unclear when Dennis and Ravenell began dating, but they made their relationship Instagram-official in October.
“Chleb and I have known each other since we started to, like, flirt and kind of hang out before quarantine,” she said in a confessional scene. “I don’t know. A few months ago. I don’t know the exact date. I’ll have to look. He’s a f–king nice Ravenell!”
She previously dated Thomas Ravenel — who is unrelated to her new boyfriend — during the early seasons of the Bravo series. They share two children, Kensie and Saint.
Later in the episode, Dennis got into a heated argument with Simon over the way they treated each other in the midst of the fallout.
Simon said, “Bottom line is, I feel like if my friend had a family business that they felt like they needed to make a statement like that because they were getting so blown up, I would have knocked on your door. I would have sent you a text message. I would have called you. There’s so many forms.”
“You literally don’t even know what happened,” Dennis retorted, claiming she cared about the backlash that Gwynn’s received for having her as an employee.
Dennis added in a confessional, “I’m very sorry for the fact that they received any messages online like saying, ‘Why did you employ that person?’ However, I don’t think they should have posted anything. It was f–king humiliating. In my eyes, it was bullying in it of itself.”
“Southern Charm” airs Thursday nights on Bravo at 9 p.m. ET.
