Michelle Obama condemned the Capitol riot and slammed President Donald Trump’s leadership.
The former first lady waited a day before she released a statement about the violent protest at the Capitol. On Thursday, Michelle took to Twitter to seemingly blame the POTUS by saying that the incident was a “fulfillment” of his wishes.
“Like all of you, I watched as a gang — organized, violent, and mad they’d lost an election —laid siege to the United States Capitol. They set up gallows. They proudly waved the traitorous flag of the Confederacy through the halls. They desecrated the center of American government. And once authorities finally gained control of the situation, these rioters and gang members were let out of the building not in handcuffs, but free to carry on with their days,” Michelle wrote.
“The day was a fulfillment of the wishes of an infantile and unpatriotic president who can’t handle the truths of his own failures. And the wreckage lays at the feet of a party and media apparatus that gleefully cheered him on, knowing full well the possibility of consequences like these.”
The ex-FLOTUS added that what she witnessed left her with so many questions about the future. She was concerned about security, extremism, propaganda and more. At the same time, she was wondering if there would be a difference if the protesters were those who go to Ebenezer Baptist Church every Sunday.
The “Becoming” author mentioned the peaceful Black Lives Matter protests that brought together people of different races and classes. She also slammed those who criticized the Premier League players who took a knee in protest following the killing of George Floyd.
“And for those who call others unpatriotic for simply taking a knee in silent protest, for those who wonder why we need to be reminded that Black Lives Matter at all, yesterday made it painfully clear that certain Americans are, in fact, allowed to denigrate the flag and symbols of our nation. They’ve just got to look the right way. What do all those folks have to say?” she concluded her statement by leaving the public a question.
Michelle’s husband and former President Barack Obama also released a statement about the incident on Twitter Wednesday. The ex-POTUS also blamed Trump saying the violence at the Capitol was “incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election.”
Meanwhile, several Twitter users addressed Obama saying the country needs him.
“We need you sir,” one Twitter user commented.
“We need President Barack Obama now more than ever. I hope he will be able to issue a statement on the major networks to help bring about the reconciliation we need right now. It feels like we are on the precipice of a civil war. This is not the country I’ve known all my life,” Dr. Eugene Gu tweeted.
