Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Wilds!
The Wilds, Prime Video‘s binge-worthy new series about a group of teen girls stranded on an island, should be next in your streaming queue if you haven’t watched it all already. Season 1 took us into the world of eight young women promised a retreat, but instead traumatized with a mysterious accident that leaves them to fend for themselves in the middle of nowhere.
In a big twist, it turns out that the “accident” was actually engineered by a researcher named Gretchen (Rachel Griffiths), who is hoping to prove that a society run by women is inherently more successful than the modern day world we live in largely run by men. To prove her point, she selects eight girls for her Dawn of Eve project, which observes them as they try to survive on their own in the wild.
Unfortunately, not everything goes as smoothly as she’s hoping. For one, her operative on the ground dies in Episode 1, and things only go downhill from there, between food poisoning, lost medicine, and plenty of fights and drama between the girls as they struggle to keep their sanity on the island, increasingly fearful they’ll never be rescued.
If you’ve already made it through all 10 episodes and still have some questions, here’s everything you need to know about The Wilds, Amazon’s gripping new survival show.
With a group of teens stranded on an island with no end in sight, there’s likely at least one casualty, right? Well, that’s what we suspect, anyway. While The Wilds didn’t officially confirm who died, and left us with plenty of questions after that cliffhanger of a Season 1 finale, we can make a pretty solid guess based on Episode 9, “Day Twenty-Two.” In the episode, Dean Young (Troy Winbush), who is working with Gretchen on her Dawn of Eve experiment, is tasked with sorting through a box of belongings that’s revealed to have been Martha’s (Jenna Clause).
“If you have any interest in proving to me your worth, you’ll find us a way out of this one,” Gretchen, tells him at the start of the episode, handing the box over to Dean to look through so he can find something to blackmail Martha’s family out of suing her for whatever happened to the girl. The episode then takes us into Martha’s story, but she’s not present for an interview to give her own commentary like the other girls have in past episodes, which also points to her death.
When Dean is done looking through Martha’s belongings, he becomes visibly emotional as he packs the box back up, another hint that Martha likely passed. “I couldn’t find much,” he says as her returns the items to Gretchen. “I know you’re looking for a creative solution so the family can’t sue, but I think it might be one of these issues that an extremely uncreative move is in order.” She replies,”So throw money at it?” Dean agrees, then caves when Gretchen pushes him about Martha’s past criminal case when she perjured herself.
While most signs point to Martha being dead, we also don’t know what happened to Nora (Helena Howard), who is also not present for interviews. But after the big reveal that Martha’s been working with Gretchen, it’s possible that she’s separate from the rest of the girls and won’t be interviewed or treated like them, since she’s technically part of the Dawn of Eve team.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Amy B. Harris teased what’s in store for the Unsinkable Eight. “As you may or may not have noticed some of the women do not end up in the interrogation room,” Harris says. “We’ll have to figure out why that is.” Harris also shared that’s she looking forward to “exploring the stories on the island about what happens and where some of these girls may be.”
The Wilds stars Sophia Ali as Fatin Jadmani, Shannon Berry as Dot Campbell, Jenna Clause as Martha Blackburn, Reign Edwards as Rachel Reid, Helena Howard as Nora Reid, Mia Healey as Shelby Goodkind, Erana James as Toni Shalifoe, Sarah Pidgeon as Leah Rilke, David Sullivan as Daniel Faber, Troy Winbush as Dean Young, and Rachel Griffiths as Gretchen Klein.
Yes, The Wilds has been officially renewed for Season 2! The news broke just days after the series first premiered on Prime Video, and it’s likely we’ll be seeing new episodes sometime later this year or in 2022. For more info, check out our post on everything we know about Season 2 of The Wilds.
